finding solid ground

Finding Solid Ground is a series created during The Arctic Circle Residency, a program that brings together international artists, scientists, architects, and educators aboard a specially outfitted expedition vessel. Together, they navigate the high‑Arctic Svalbard Archipelago and the surrounding Arctic Ocean, using the landscape as both catalyst and collaborator.

Svalbard holds a profound place in Philips’ research saying, “The north is always calling—its surreal arctic creatures, the midnight sun, the vastness, and the quiet fear of witnessing an Arctic decay.” This tension between wonder and fragility forms the core of the series, grounding the work in both awe and urgency.
